  • Utility Pole Location Installation and Relocation
  • An alternative location has been found for the new utility pole for the fitness center on the university side of Atlantic Avenue. This location will not impact any residential property.
  • The utility pole that is on the residential side of Atlantic Avenue will also be relocated.
  • The university will provide the community notice before this work is undertaken. This work is anticipated to be complete by May 2013.

ISSUES IN PROGRESS
  • Neighborhood Disturbances
  • There have been no new complaints issued.
  • Suspected gunshots on Raymond Road (mid-September) – There is a discrepancy as to whether or not they were gun shots. If they were in fact gun shots, this would be the third recent occurrence.
  • Parking – City Police are increasing enforcement of parking violations in the university area.
  • Street light on end of Charles Street - The street light is very dim and may cause harm to pedestrians when walking around at night.
  • Hours of crossing guard at Linden Street and Loring AvenueA committee member asked about the hours of the crossing guard between Linden Street and Loring Avenue were inquired about. Adria Leach will get the hours and update the committee at the next SSUNAC meeting.
  • Alumni Field Lights
  • Adria Leach confirmed that the alumni field lights cannot be dimmed. The university has reached out to the manufacturer for solutions and to check to see if the angle of the lights has moved over time by natural elements and can be readjusted.
  • Tobacco Free Campus
  • A committee member questioned if the tobacco free policy is enforced on campus.
  • Shawn Newton responded that the university is approaching this issue with a community standard perspective. Students have been compliant overall and more mindful of not smoking on campus. There will be a transitional period in which more of the student body will progressively abide by the rule.
  • There has been a significant decrease in the amount of smoking on campus.
NEW BUSINESS
  • Shelter in Place Drill
  • The university will conduct a shelter in place drill on all campuses, including Cat Cove, on Wednesday, November 7 from 11-11:15 a.m.~ This drill will be similar in nature to the one held on campus this past January, but will now use sirens and a PA system to signify the start and end of the drill.
  • In the weeks preceding the drill, the university will conduct individualized tests as well as a system-wide test of the sirens. We will advise you of the date of the system-wide test once it is determined.
  • This campus-wide safety exercise is aimed to familiarize the university community with specific instructions and procedures that are critical to emergency situations that require students, faculty and staff to remain in place and wait for further instructions. There will be no impact off campus, but neighbors may hear the sirens. Shelter-in-place orders are given to protect people from moving into a potentially dangerous area. All students and employees are informed of the drill.
